Education illuminates the path to the future. While many take education for granted, there are those who have the will, but do not have the means to achieve. We at Child Fund, recognised that the children of the Estate Sector of Nuwara Eliya deserves quality education. We believe that education for these children must be beyond the Tea bus.
Many of the children studying in schools of the Estate Sector displayed poor academic performances. We address this issue by conducting supplementary classes, exam preparatory sessions with model papers, and training teachers of modern, practical and effective method of teaching, related resources and materials. We also ensured that that they would develop life skills that would benefit them in their future.
The support of family is a vital aspect. Child Fund’s Parent Awareness Sessions were intended to make parents aware of the value of education, and how developing good relationships with their children would benefit both parties, as it came into our attention that parents, mostly fathers, were not keen on their children’s education since they themselves lacked knowledge on the importance of education.
We formed children’s clubs in all estates in Nuwara Eliya with the aim of enriching confident among the children and aid them in developing life skills and discipline among school children. This became a platform to bring out the hidden talents, and we trained and encouraged peer mediation via school prefects, since words and intervention through peers is a much more effective way of reaching these children than being done through adults. The children organised many events and even celebrated international days such as International Women’s Day.
