Transition from childhood to adulthood can be tough without proper guidance. It came into our attention at Child Fund that the teenagers face many challenges, and that they find it difficult to face them, and result in them making bad decisions.

We encouraged and trained teachers and principals to have a positive perspective towards these children and ensure that they focus more and encourage them to perform better. The Child Fund also conducted special seminars targeting those children would were to face their scholarship, Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examinations, while also providing them with required materials and model papers, since most do not have the capacity of afford such materials. We are happy that the results obtained by students at these examinations have improved.

The Child Fund also contributed in upgrading the infrastructure facilities, providing learning materials, furniture, to ensure that a better learning environment would result in improved literacy levels at estate schools in Nuwara Eliya.

A healthy body and a healthy mind play an important role in a child’s education. We learnt that poor sanitation facilities and unsafe drinking water have contributed to prevailing health conditions among children, and the Child Fund rectified this issue by providing safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to the respective residential communities of the children. And this resulted in reduced rates of sickness and improved school attendance.

Training and awareness sessions were carried out with the intention of preventing unhealthy and early pregnancy among teenagers, spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Awareness programs on Reproduction and Sexual Health were conducted for the youth. Trainings were conducted targeting teenagers, teachers and volunteers, where teachers and volunteers would be resourceful to advice and raise awareness.

The youth are the present and the future of a nation. The formation of Youth Clubs at 11 estates in Nuwara Eliya contributed toward the development of youth skills. They were encouraged to partake in micro project to improve their communities. They become leaders of their community owing to their contribution toward the community they live in.

Unemployment among the youth prevails due to lack of qualifications both professionally and academically. To ensure they do not end up being estate labourers, many vocational training sessions on diverse areas such as photography, IT, videography, and beauty culture were carried out, and financial aids were provided to those who wished to follow courses such as nursing. The main intention of Child Fund was to broaden their employment market.
